Nashville may not be famous for its bakeries and patisseries — after all, country music, hot chicken, and BBQ take up most of the conversation. But Music City is full of great bakeries that are sprinkled (pun intended) throughout the city.
Whether you’re craving a piping hot scone, a kolache, a melt-in-your-mouth cookie, a fluffy donut, or the most amazing bagel you’ve ever had, you can find it in one of Nashville’s best bakeries. Out-of-town visitors: feel free to add any of these bakeries to your foodie tour of Music City. Locals: if you haven’t had a bite at any of these stops, we suggest you make a beeline.
1. Sweet 16th
311 N 16th Street, Nashville, TN
Owned by East Nashvillians Dan and Ellen Einstein, Sweet 16th has become a favorite in the burgeoning East Nashville community ever since it opened in 2004. The small batch neighborhood bakery offers delicious muffins, scones, cookies, cupcakes, and tarts, as well as some savory items that are perfect for breakfast if you’d prefer not to start your day with a sugar rush. Sweet 16th also serves a variety of beverages, including hot chocolate, tea, and locally roasted coffee.
2. Dozen Bakery
516 Hagan Street, Suite #103, Nashville, TN
Located in Nashville’s up-and-coming Wedgewood-Houston community, Dozen Bakery is one of the best bakeries in Nashville. It’s got the online reviews to prove it.
Dozen Bakery’s story is interesting: It began as a temporary holiday pop-up in 2009 and impressed so many customers they quickly transitioned to a full business with a brick-and-mortar store on Hagan Street. The menu is full of baguettes, challah bread, croissants and a slew of sweets that are sure to satisfy your sugar cravings. And if you’re craving something a little more savory, stop by for brunch or lunch.
You don’t have to visit Dozen Bakery to enjoy their offerings. Their breads, pastries, croissants, and cookies can be found at a handful of businesses around Nashville, including Pinewood Social, Legato Gelato, and Butcher and Bee.
700 Main Street Nashville, TN
If a bagel is your breakfast item of choice, Bagel Face Bakery is the place to me. Housed in a quaint little storefront on Main Street in East Nashville, Bagel Face Bakery offers preservative-free bagels made fresh daily. Skeptics will be pleased to know that their bagels are produced in a similar fashion as New York bagels. Bagel Face Bakery’s partnerships with local businesses like Benton’s Bacon, Porter Road Butcher, and Willow Farms take their bagel sandwiches to the next level. Paired with a cup of locally roasted Bongo Java, you simply can’t go wrong.
4. Vegan Vee
306 46th Avenue N, Nashville, TN
Words like “vegan” and “gluten-free” can be turn offs for those without dietary restrictions, but we invite you to be wowed at Vegan Vee in Nashville’s Sylvan Park neighborhood.
Gluten-free and vegan muffins, donuts, brownies, cupcakes, cakes, truffles, and cookies abound at Vegan Vee, as well as a number of savory items. The bakery uses predominantly organic ingredients that are locally-sourced whenever possible. Plus, it’s a peanut-free facility, and they offer soy- and nut-free items daily.
The only downside: Vegan Vee is open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays — but their out-of-this-world pastries are the best way to start your weekend.
3900 Hillsboro Pike, Nashville, TN
After 30+ years in business, Fox’s Donut Den in Green Hills continues to keep customers coming back for more. Their old fashioned cake donuts will blow you away. Quite a statement, but it really is that good. In fact, we’d venture to say it’s one of Nashville’s best bakeries — if not, it certainly has the best donuts.
In addition to tasty donuts (offerings include glazed, maple bacon, cake, and chocolate, to name a few), Fox’s also offers pastry items like apple fritters and chocolate eclairs, bagels, and muffins.
